Recently, Arhaus contacted me to see if I’d be interested in working on a little project with them. Yes, please! Here was my challenge: to design a mood board for my dream she-shed. Now, if you’re new around here, I’m Australian and we Aussies love our sheds! An Aussie shed is made of corrugated iron, with a squeaky door that threatens to fall off it’s hinges and it has wonky cement slab pavers as a floor. We fill our sheds with tools, lawn mowers, spare car parts, camping gear and bits of wood that might come in handy one day (and if you’re lucky enough to have power to your shed then there’s probably an old fridge with a few beers in it too). Aussie sheds are also full of spiders, cockroaches, slater bugs and crickets (and don’t even get me started on the snakes!).
An Aussie shed is not what I have in mind when I imagine my dream she-shed. A she-shed is the female version of a man-cave: it’s a peaceful oasis to escape to where the worries of life aren’t nagging at you. Since it’s my dream, I get to design it with only me in mind … and boy it’s fun to be indulgently selfish once in a while! I wanted my she-shed to be calm and quiet because I’m a stay-at-home mum and my world is rarely calm or quiet. I imagined a tranquil, comfy spot to read a book in peace, while sipping coffee and stuffing my gob with chocolate. I also wanted a relaxed British Colonial Style vibe to it. Without further ado, here is my dream she-shed mood board:
My she-shed mood board started with the Portsmouth upholstered chair. How comfy does this chair look! The fabric is so creamy and has exactly zero amounts of banana or boogers mashed into it. As beautiful as this chair is in the mood board, it’s the back of it that I fell truly in love with. I’m fairly sure Justin Timberlake’s SexyBack song was written about this chair.
Once I’d chosen the chair, I set about adding other elements to give it the British Colonial vibe I was going for. I wanted plenty of dark timber, cane and rattan, plus big, leafy, tropical plants. I’ve imagined the tea cart is always set out with a selection of coffee, chocolates and sparkling mineral water. The beautiful fan would keep me cool on those long, hot Summer nights that I’m not stuck in the house calming screaming babies. The soy candles would be flickering and not once would I have to yell “Hot hot hot! Don’t touch!” in my annoying mum-voice. Ahhh, the serenity.
I hope you all liked my dream she-shed mood board. If you liked the sexy-backed Portsmouth upholstered chair, you should see the rest of Arhaus’s living room furniture range.
Let me know what items are a must for your dream she-shed. Can any of them compete with the gorgeous-backed Portsmouth chair? I want to know all about it!
