Have you ever received a present that wasn’t quite your style? Frilly lingerie when you prefer Bridget Jones-style Spanx? A knit cardigan with pompoms when you were hoping for a black sports hoodie? I’ve received my fair share of
crap unwanted gifts over the years and was the lucky recipient again this Christmas.
In all fairness, there was nothing grossly wrong with this Scotty dog cookie jar – the problem is me. I don’t like red decor. Now before you all send me hate mail, let me clarify that I don’t like red decor in MY home. Other people can rock red like there’s no tomorrow, but I personally feel that red is a “loud” colour. So between the nicotine-yellow fur and the screaming-loud-red collar and tongue, Scotty was in need of a makeover.
I used leftover paint that i already had (I’m cheap like that). I started with the blue spray paint, spraying him all over a few times. Then I used the kids’ craft paint to add a few details to the face and collar.
Normally when I receive a gift that I don’t love, I’ll graciously thank the giver, then donate it to my local thrift shop. But I had a definite purpose in mind when I received this cookie jar: I wanted to use Scotty to store our dog treats. (The dogs have to earn them by sitting still to be brushed.) Look at Tex ogling the treat jar!
I really enjoy these tiny little makeovers. As much as I love getting dirty with big DIY projects, sometimes I just need to do a quick little project during nap time to feel like I’ve accomplished something (something other than endless loads of laundry and dishes!).
Next on the agenda: building the bike shed.
