As it’s the end of the year and my life has become a glorious mayhem (aka summer holidays with 3 kids), I’m trying to be realistic about the amount of work (or lack thereof) I’ll get done on the house. So I thought I’d have a look back at the changes we made to our house this year.
First up, I built a Media Wall in our Family Room.
(Before: the wall where the Christmas tree and toy cupboard are is where the new built-ins will go. I must have been working on the linen cupboard when this was taken – you’ll see what it looks like now in the next photo.)
While finishing the Media Wall took up most of my spare time this year, I did manage to get a few more projects done as well.
I emptied out our old study (the junk room) which was a massive job in itself.
I sorted and purged, sorted and purged, until it was empty. Then, with a few coats of paint and a wall of DIY wooden shelves I transformed our former study into a Third Bedroom for our oldest child, #1.
(After: he’s absolutely LOVING his new room – I’ll give you a closer look in the new year.)
As #1 was vacating the Second Bedroom he shared with #2, I decided to do a bit of a room refresh there as well.
I added library book ledges and fixed my old set of drawers for added storage. #2 requested MORE PINK, so I made some colourful bunting to hang throughout the room and added a sweet gallery wall with pops of pink.
Another project we did at the beginning of the year (pre-blogging) was to paint the exterior of our Family Room extension.
I reglazed the windows which had broken bits of putty falling out – a much easier job than I’d anticipated (which NEVER happens by the way – things always take twice as long as you think it will!). It always amazes me the difference a couple of coats of paint can make. I love the contrast of the dark blue house and the bright white window frames.
(After: doesn’t the dark blue and crisp white look a million times better??!!)
Another thing we accomplished (that we can’t really take any credit for) was having Solar Panels installed. Such a good decision! Our power bills are so much lower now. I get excited every time a bill comes because each one is lower than the previous one. After summer we might even be in credit – woohoo!
So that’s what we accomplished on our house this year. As crazy as it gets sometimes with all the kids and dogs, I really love working on our house, transforming it into a beautiful home. Over time, as our needs change, we adapt our home to suit our situation. I firmly believe your home should be everything you want it to be. With a little bit of paint and elbow grease (and LOTS of patience and perseverance) anyone can make their home a welcoming retreat.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy holidays! xxx
