When we first laid eyes on our house, the one thing that stood out through all the leopard-print decor and smoke-stained furniture was the jarrah timber floors. Sure, their polyurethane finish was in a terrible condition, but we could see their potential and we were excited that they ran through the entire house (with the exception of the bathroom/laundry area).
After ripping out the dirty carpet from the bedrooms, we sanded the floors throughout the house and then had to decide how to finish them. I loved the look of high gloss floors but I worried that they would show every speck of dust and dog hair. Maybe a satin finish would be better? I asked Dad and in his infinite wisdom he suggested wax. He told us that glossy polyurethane floors feel a bit like plastic on your bare feet while waxed floors feel like velvety timber. And then he said the golden words: “Waxed timber is EASY to maintain”.
Well Dad, you were so right about the floors. We’ve had a steady stream of dogs, kids, bikes and furniture scrape along our floors on a daily basis over the past decade and they are holding up beautifully! Do they get scratched? Yes. Are the scratches easily fixed? Absolutely!
Every couple of years we slap another coat of wax on the floors and they’re good to go. If we happen to get a major scratch on the floor we simply rub a bit of wax on that spot. We don’t have to empty the room, sand the floor, coat it in something super smelly and then keep the kids off it for days. With wax there’s no harmful fumes and you can literally walk on it straight away.
I’m sure purists would tell you that you have to polish the wax to a shiny finish but honestly nobody has time for that. We’ve polished our floors exactly zero times and they look great (but I may have lower standards than you). Plus our waxed floors feel … velvety. I don’t know how else to describe it. We’re always barefoot when we’re inside and it’s lovely to feel the smooth wood beneath your feet.
That’s my two cents. Does anyone else love waxed floors?
