I’m in full-on BEDROOM RENOVATION MODE at the moment. Our third (and smallest) bedroom is finally being transformed from the junk room into a bedroom for Child #1 (who is currently sharing a bedroom with #2).
After many long hours of sorting and re-homing, I eventually cleared almost everything out of the room. The stuff that was left (like lego and the big blanket box) that will end up in this room anyway, I just piled high in the middle of the room and covered with a drop sheet.
(“Look at those timeless apricot walls!” Said no-one, ever.)
Just a quick note about oil enamel vs water enamel paint: in the photo above, the door was painted with crisp white oil paint (a decade ago), while the doorframe was painted with crisp white water enamel paint. See how the oil enamel door paint has faded to pee-stain yellow over time? That’s why I stopped using it. The water enamel paint stays white forever and cleaning up your brush is a million times easier in water.
Moving on – let’s talk dirty. This room was unbelievably dirty! In our defense, the window had been blocked by a bookcase for many years and there was so much stuff stored in the room that you couldn’t even see the skirting boards, let alone clean them. Before I could even think about painting I had to WASH EVERYTHING.
After washing everything, I painted one coat of gloss white on the door, skirting boards and window frame; two coats of flat white on the ceiling and cornice; and three coats of low sheen white on the walls. Behold, the power of paint:
Im loving the whole room freshly painted white and flooded with natural light. It’s so fresh and clean and calm. Fresh, clean and calm are exactly NONE of the things that #1 wants his room to be. I asked him how he imagines his new room and he replied “orange walls, with a disco ball, and loads of bright colours”. Ummm … no.
Paint has given this room a clean slate and now I’ll have to get creative to incorporate #1’s Bright Orange Disco theme without having an epileptic fit every time I open the door. Any suggestions??
