Our house is quite small. A small house is good in so many ways – there’s less to clean, everyone must learn to share and take turns, we’re always within hearing (and shouting) distance of the kids – to name a few. One of the down sides of a small house is that there isn’t a “spare” room.
When Emma and I first moved into our house, a decade ago, we were young and childless and, after living in a bachelor pad apartment for a few years, a three bedroom house seemed plenty big enough. We claimed the Master Bedroom as our own and did what any normal young adults would do with the other two bedrooms – we created Junk Room 1 and Junk Room 2.
A few years later, the second bedroom became the nursery and the third bedroom became the study/junk room. There was still plenty of room for us and our junk. (I don’t mean hoarder-level junk, I just mean spare furniture, baby clothes, craft stuff, lamps … you can never have too many lamps, right?)
(This was the study/junk room a couple of months ago. Sit back and really take it all in. Lego, scrapbooking paper, lamps, toddler bike, paperwork …)
A couple of years later we turned the nursery into a shared bedroom/nursery as baby #2 arrived. I’d read wonderful things about children sharing a bedroom and how it promoted better sleeping patterns. A shared bedroom for two kids seemed ideal. And of course, we still kept the study/junk room.
(This was my incredibly sexy desk area. So inspirational. Almost like a Zen Buddhist retreat.)
A couple more years later, with the arrival of baby #3, Emma and I knew we would have to lose the study/junk room. We weren’t shitting bricks yet though – the baby would surely sleep in our room for the first few months. We simply put the cot and #3’s set of drawers in the Master Bedroom for the time being – just until we got the junk room sorted.
Two more years, people! Baby #3 is still in a cot in our bedroom. For the past 2 years we’ve been wheeling the cot out of the way every day when we need to get to our clothes. I am ready for a change!
So here’s the plan: move #3 out of our room and into the shared bedroom. But to make room for #3, we need to move #1 out of the shared bedroom and into the study/junk room. But for that to happen we have to move the study to our new Media Wall and get rid of all the junk.
(This was the study/junk room today. Believe it or not this is a HUGE improvement. Those bare shelves and desk are the result of many many hours of sorting through piles of paperwork/photos/electronics/etc.)
Losing our junk room has forced me to sort through SO MUCH STUFF. Stuff I hadn’t used for years. Stuff I’d forgotten I had. Stuff we have no room for now that we’re a family of 5 living in a 3 bedroom house.
Switching all the rooms up should keep me busy for quite some time. I’m hoping to get #1’s bedroom makeover completed before Christmas. Then the Second Bedroom will get a little refresh (maybe before Christmas?). Then I can tackle the Master Bedroom makeover next year. That’s the plan!
